"Pace Rating System"

"Pace Rating System," by noted Golf Course Architect Desmond Muirhead, originally published in Executive Golfer, June 1998. Muirhead introduces the Pace Rating System, and describes how Bill Yates was the first to take this objective measurement tool to scale in improving the pace of play and in working with architects to design successful pace of play into the course.

[excerpt]  "I first met Bill about five years ago...Bill is tall, fair-haired, with a very pleasant face and manner. He is almost overly polite, with no hint of arrogance, which is strange, as he once played golf to a four handicap. By training, Bill is an industrial engineer. That is a man who checks assembly lines to speed up the flow, while at the same time he tries to improve the processes. The industrial engineer also does time and motion studies to improve technology, monitors the equipment for breakage and efficiency, and optimizes staffing to reduce labor. All in all, he is interested in increasing the quality and efficiency of the production. By training and experience, Bill seems to be naturally fitted to speed up play on golf courses..."    --Author Desmond Muirhead
