July Tip for Players and Managers: Solving the Slow Play Mysteries: Discovery 4

To continue our "Solving the Slow Play Mysteries" Series...

Discovery 4: The playing experience – and the memory of that playing experience – is the primary product that a golf course sells. What just happened on the course – a good or bad experience – walks off the 18th green with either a satisfied or a disgruntled player. It then inevitably finds its way into the locker room, at the bar, in the car going home, around the dinner table, and etched into the player’s personal golf memory. And it’s that memory that will direct the player’s decision-making from here on out, when choosing a course to play. Golf is a business, and like any business it has a product. If courses don’t look after that product and ensure that it is high quality and good value, they can expect their market share and their revenue to systematically erode. As if that weren't enough, research has shown that customers share their experiences, which becomes a powerful marketing channel for a course. But they're more likely to share a bad experience than a good one, and these reviews find their way into social media and Yelp. So a player’s experience and the memory of what happened on your course can be a great gift that creates loyal players, or a high cost as you lose customers.
